SWEET BALANCE
Mark’s Musing Sunday Aug. 9, 2009
today’s Musing  written and published from south Calgary, near Fish Creek Park

Morning walk report: 14C/57F, mostly sunny, calm - a fresh start to a leisure day in which there is not time for loafing; dog walk (Gusta is developing a real taste for raspberries - with my help of course), gym trip, Starbucks stop, going to pick up #1 daughter Carla shortly (she’s in town) for a family brunch, read Margaret Carlson’s column http://livingbetterlonger.net/rovingbilldeliversgood.html (always insightful) ...

My day/weekend and last week’s overhanging ‘things to do’ are set out behind me so I don’t stare at them while I’m playing this melody on my keyboard . . those tasks await me later, longing for my attention . .

Yesterday went by without any help from me; people laughed and played without me, some lived, some died, some were born, some re-born .. and that was just before lunch. We golfed (the course IS drying up), ate and laughed with friends... in fact, I think we found more golf balls than we lost, hit a few good shots ... but left our best game for another day.

Most of my adult life I’ve been stepping in puddles as often as I’ve had my foot in my mouth - the mis-steps have brought no more or less pain, no more or less joy than the carefully calculated ‘correct steps’ . . and remembering that is important.  I need not look far or long to find many examples of those failures to communicate effectively or errors in judgment.

Doing what we are inclined to do, saying what we are inclined to say is not wrong.  It is some times ill-timed or insufficiently considered, but it is not wrong.  Reminding myself of that, as I have this morning, is healthy.

Getting a grip, on clubs or on life, is striking balance between holding no too tight or so loosely we risk letting go. In between, there is a sweet balance. It happens when we smile at the sound of a voice, get tickled to meet with people, or thrill to have brunch with our family.

There is no space between my ache and my longing - the need to do what I feel compelled to due is shackled by my perception of reality’s anchor . . but I am working on it

Must go now to collect my kid at her hotel  . .

August 8 - TWO SCOOPS IN A WAFFLE CONE - Belated happy birthday wishes Mark. Sorry I  didn't catch on. As for living each day as if it were one's last, I'll share a little experience with you. When I was a little boy, attending Mennonite funerals conducted in German, a certain song was almost always sung: "Diese ochen blick is dein, die nexte mecht ferleicht nicht sein" (This blink of your eye is yours, but the next one may not occur ) I've never forgotten that, EG, Calgary, AB
